Description
11th Cosmic Ray International Seminar
CRIS 2018
"Entering the Era of Multi-Messenger Astronomy"
The eleventh Cosmic Ray International Seminar, CRIS 2018, is being organized by the Catania and Napoli Divisions of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), by the Department of Physics E. Pancini of the University of Napoli Federico II and by the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Catania in Portopalo di Capo Passero (SR) from 18-22 June 2018.
This conference series started in Catania in 1996 focusing on Relativistic Ion Studies and moved in the field of Cosmic Ray Physics as of 2004. The recent detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-VIRGO Collaboration and the first evidence for anisotropy in Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays have marked an impressive progress in the field of astroparticle physics and have pointed out the extraordinary potential for new discoveries in a multi-messenger approach to the study of the Universe. Both discoveries are the result of an incredibly long research activity in the field (lasting 100 years or so), since the prediction of the gravitational waves by Albert Einstein and since the recognition of the genuine extraterrestrial origin of the cosmic ray radiation by Victor Hess.
The present times couldn't be more exciting and promising. The dream of 'simultaneous' observations of different signals from the same astrophysical source has suddenly become a real scientific framework.
CRIS 2018, following the experience of previous editions, aims to present overviews of existing data and reports from the present and future experiments. Talks will cover both theoretical/phenomenological and experimental/observational aspects, in order to give an exhaustive overview of this complex field. The discussion about the present status and future plans requires to involve theorists and experimentalists working on various messengers. Thus, the progress in astroparticle physics achieved through space- and ground-based detectors is expected to play a major role in the scientific program of CRIS 2018.
The program will include invited lectures and contributed talks. As in the past, the CRIS 2018 Conference is addressed to scientists in the field as well as to PhD and graduate students. We will encourage lively and informal discussions among participants.
The ARENA 2018 Conference at LNS, Catania, 12-15 June 2018, is just before CRIS 2018. Don't miss it!
