The Advanced Sensing Technology Laboratory of the School of Electronic Science and Engineering at Jilin University is one of the earliest research units in China to carry out gas sensors. The laboratory has developed the first semiconductor gas sensor in China, established a series of core technologies, provided important technical support for the development of China's sensor industry, and made special contributions to the development of the sensor industry. It is known as the "North Gas Sensor" by the academic and industrial circles. In recent years, the laboratory has brought academic leaders and backbone from overseas, which has elevated us to a new level in basic research and development applications.

At present, the laboratory has 1 recipient of The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 3 recipients of the National Excellent Young Scientists Fund, 2 chief scientists of the National Key Research and Development Program, 1 leader of the Innovation Team of the Ministry of Education, 1 "Changbai Mountain Scholar" in Jilin Province, 2 young and middle-aged scientific and technological innovation leaders in Jilin Province, 11 professors, 4 associate professors, more than 40 doctoral students, and more than 60 master's students. It can be seen that the laboratory is led by nationally distinguished young scholars, with national excellent young scientists and Changbai Mountain scholars as the backbone, and young chief scientists as well as selected candidates for the Jilin University Outstanding Youth or Excellent Youth Cultivation Program, and candidates of "Golden Seed" program as young reserve forces, forming a research team with clear hierarchy, reasonable professional structure, and cross integration.

The laboratory attaches great importance to the full chain research model and has achieved significant performance in basic research, key technologies, and engineering applications. In terms of basic research: the number of SCI papers published by our team ranks first among international research teams of the same kind. Due to our outstanding contributions, Jilin University ranks fourth in the world in terms of SCI papers in the field of gas sensors (from material people). Considering the fact that the top three institutions (the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the French National Center for Scientific Research and the University of California) are composed of multiple research institutes or campuses, Jilin University's influence in gas sensor field is amazing. In terms of key technology development, multiple key technologies have been developed, including in vehicle gas sensors, atmospheric environment sensors, microenvironmental gas sensors, industrial/household safety gas sensors, and exhalation marker detection sensors. In terms of engineering applications, we cooperate with companies such as First Automobile Group, Shanghai Automobile Group, Henan Hanwei, and Yangzhou Aoliwei to carry out engineering research on gas and humidity sensors and systems.

The laboratory has undertaken 2 items in national key research and development projects, 1 item in youth project, 1 item in "863 Plan" project of the Ministry of Science and Technology1 item in major scientific research instrument development project funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 item in outstanding youth fund project, three items in key projects, 3 items in National Excellent Young Scientists Fund projects, and more than 30 items in general and youth projects, 1 key project of the 173rd National Defense Science and Technology Program of the Military Science and Technology Commission, and 1 outsourced project of the National Defense Science and Technology Innovation Special Zone. Up to now, we have published over 500 SCI papers, authorized more than 80 national invention patents, and won 2 first prizes of Jilin Province Science and Technology Awards.

The laboratory focuses on the development direction of sensing technology, focuses on key issues in the field of sensing, conducts original basic research, constructs advanced intelligent sensing systems, and condenses the following research directions:

  1. New sensing materials: design and preparation of semiconductor oxide low dimensional, porous, and hierarchical structured nanomaterials, new solid electrolyte and electrode materials, new combustion catalysts, sensing material additives and adsorbents, flexible sensing materials, etc.
  2. Gas sensors: Research and development of gas sensors based on semiconductor oxide nanostructures, mixed potential gas sensors based on solid electrolytes, and fuel cell gas sensors based on Nafion membranes.
  3. Fluorescent biosensors: Research on fluorescent biosensors based on nanocarbon materials and novel two-dimensional materials, used for detecting biomass such as metal ions, DNA, proteins, etc., applied for physiological detection and early diagnosis of diseases.
  4. Flexible pressure sensors: Research and develop a series of sensitive and electrode layers with microstructure/nanostructure, construct a flexible wearable pressure sensor and its array with high sensitivity, wide detection range, and fast response characteristics, and achieve applications in large-area pressure distribution recognition, gesture recognition, and pressure distribution visualization in space.
  5. Intelligent sensing system: Utilizing sensors to construct sensing systems and advanced instruments, including environmental pollution gas source monitoring and processing systems, real-time monitoring sensing networks for atmospheric pollution gases, industrial/household combustible gas alarm systems, electronic noses, portable wearable sensing systems, exhalation marker monitoring systems, as well as sensor characteristics and reliability evaluation systems and instruments.
