      Falling into Gargantua: gravitational waves from extreme-mass-ratio inspirals 20m

      The most potent gravitational wave sources in the Universe are the coalescence of compact objects in astrophysical binaries. A particular merger class is the falling of a stellar-mass body into a supermassive black hole, a.k.a extreme mass ratio inspiral (EMRI). These events are expected to be one of the primary sources observable by future space-borne observatories such as Laser-Interferometry-Space-Antenna (LISA). Having rich waveforms with hundreds of thousands of cycles, EMRIs allow measuring the parameters of the binaries with unprecedented precision. On the other hand, the theoretical modeling of these events is challenging.
      This talk will briefly review the source modeling and parameter estimation of gravitational waves for EMRIs.

      Tales from Flatland - How 2D Semiconductors react to light excitation 20m

      The infinitely small and the infinitely large have always attracted the attention of human thought. In recent years, and particularly since the discovery of graphene, our knowledge of the properties of 2D matter has increased exponentially. Two-dimensional semiconductors acquire particular importance in this context: our habitual technology is silicon-based, presenting scale limitations. Being able to implement semiconductors at the nanoscale can strongly incentivize the nanotechnology revolution we are facing. The purpose of this presentation is to offer the viewer an overview of the optical properties of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs), particular semiconductors with the thickness of a single atomic layer that gained enormous scientific interest in the last decade.
