Description

*The flagship activity of the International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG) is the International Masterclasses in particle physics. This very successful programme, addressed to high-school students, aims to inspire and motivate them by introducing them to the world of scientific research. Invited to a university or laboratory for the day, the students first follow lectures on particle physics, detectors and accelerators. The hands-on part of the activity involves analysis of real data from an experiment, followed by discussion of the results as well as a videoconference at the end of the day with groups from other countries and two moderators. The data used for the hands-on part are from the four large LHC experiments (ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb), from the BELLE II experiment at KEK, from neutrino experiments (the MINERvA and NOvA experiments at Fermilab), from astroparticle physics (the Pierre Auger Observatory) and medical applications of our field (particle therapy). Emphasis will be given to the Auger masterclass. Activities related with cosmic rays, such as the International Cosmic Day and International Muon Week are also promoted and supported by IPPOG. A dedicated “Global Cosmics” working group ensures the collection of information and exchange of experiences on outreach and educational activities in the field of cosmic rays.
