Description

Since one year after its 2008 launch, data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) have been made publicly available under the open data policy of NASA. This early commitment to open science, combined with the continuous development and release of public analysis tools and frameworks (e.g., Fermipy), has enabled researchers worldwide to promptly access, analyze, and interpret high-energy gamma-ray data, significantly enhancing the scientific return of the mission.
Open access has also fostered outreach and citizen-science initiatives. Programs such as the Fermi Masterclass allow students and non-specialists to engage directly with real gamma-ray data, performing guided analyses that closely resemble professional research workflows and achieving “ready-to-publish” level results within an educational framework.
In this talk, I will provide an overview of Fermi open data activities, emphasizing their strategic role in maximizing scientific impact, promoting transparency and reproducibility, and broadening participation in high-energy astrophysics.
