Travel information

The easiest and recommended solution is to land at Roma Fiumicino (FCO) airport and rent a car.
For completeness, we also describe below the bus option, but we'd like to underline that having a car once in L'Aquila is very helpful to easily reach LNGS.

By Car

Car drivers can take the highway A24 from Rome towards L'Aquila (approximately a one-hour drive).
If your hotel is in L'Aquila, use the exit "L'Aquila Ovest" or "L'Aquila Est", while if it is closeby LNGS use the "Assergi" exit (about 10km after L'Aquila).

If you plan to take the A24 from the Adriatic/Teramo side, please check the status of the Gran Sasso tunnel (it may be closed during the night).

By Bus

The participants landing in Fiumicino or Ciampino airports could take Gaspari or Flixbus bus to the west L’Aquila bus station (bus stop near Hotel My Suite). Timetable and ticket prices are available on their websites:

  • GaspariBus, https://www.gasparionline.it/en/search-routes/.
  • FlixBus, https://www.flixbus.it/

If in Rome, participants may take TUA-ARPA buses from Rome (Tiburtina bus station) to L’Aquila (timetable). First bus stop in L’Aquila is the same as Gaspari and Flixbus routes above (west side bus station, hotel My Suite). Final bus stop is Terminal Bus Collemaggio, located in L'Aquila downtown at walking distance from the main sites of interest in the city center.

To get from L'Aquila to LNGS, there are three options:
1) taxi cab, normally available at west side bus station (Radio Taxi L'Aquila +39 0862 25165);
2) city bus (line M6), available at Collemaggio Terminal Bus (last bus stop for TUA-ARPA bus routes);
3) highway A24 (exit "Assergi", 10-minute drive approximately).
