The aim of the course is to enable INFN researchers to improve their awareness and knowledge on the present status, current limits and future developments in novel detection techniques and related aspects (simulation, signal acquisition, tracking, particle identification,...).

The course is structured as follows: morning sessions will be devoted to seminars given by world-wide recognized detector experts, whereas, in the afternoons, “hands-on” laboratory sessions will allow participants to taste state-of-the-art detectors.

The Seminar is part of the INFN Educational Program for the INFN personnel; nevertheless a limited number of external auditors is welcome.

TOPICS

Lectures:

  • Diamond detectors - H. Kagan (Ohio State University)
  • Impact of statistics and detector characteristics on data analysis - A. Rotondi (Universita' di Pavia)
  • Intelligent detectors for triggers - F. Palla (INFN Pisa)
  • Simulation of detectors and related physical processes - P. Cirrone (INFN LNS), P. Sala (INFN Milano), R. Veenhof (CERN)
  • Ultra-fast large area vacuum detectors - O. Siegmund (Berkeley University)

Laboratory Sessions:

  • Channeling of ion beams and measurements at the LaBEC TANDEM
  • Construction of detectors for outreach and demonstration purposes: cloud and spark chambers
  • Diamond detectors
  • RICH detectors with aerogel radiator
  • Silicon and diamond pixel detectors for imaging and dosimetry in radiotherapy
