Description

X-rays are produced in the immediate vicinity of supermassive black holes and their analysis provides a unique tool to study accretion in astrophysical sources. Several X-ray emission processes produce polarized radiation and, even intrinsically unpolarized photons can become polarized through scattering. With its unique ability to measure the linear polarization of X-rays, IXPE has opened a new window into the X-ray universe and allowed us to constrain the properties of the magnetic field and the geometry of the emitting regions of AGN. In this talk, I will summarize and report how IXPE observations have improved our understanding of radio quiet and radio loud active galactic nuclei.
