Generative models for inference: how every bit of science can be used for good or evil 20m

Stochastic processes provide us with a tool for computing probabilities of future events. The probability of future states of the system given the present state, in the Bayes world, is the key to learning more about the system by looking at its evolution. We will find a stochastic process suitable for our needs and learn to use it for inference. As the process itself learns from the system, we will learn to keep our system on track and apply it to find the author of an anonymous text. Finally, with our new and shining technology, we will try and sell it to some dictator capable of taking the worst out of it.

Neutrinoless double beta decay search with CUORE and CUPID experiments 20m

The search for neutrinoless double beta decay is one of the most important challenges in the field of particle physics. It would shed light on the nature of the neutrino, which could be a Dirac of Majorana fermion, and would be the first evidence of the total lepton number violation, giving a fundamental hint for the matter-antimatter asymmetry problem.
Cryogenic calorimeters, developed by the CUORE and CUPID collaborations, perfectly suit this search, offering an excellent energy resolution (0.1%) , an optimal efficiency (80-90%) and the possibility to achieve a very low background environment (10-4 counts/(keV kg yr)).
