Description

We present the first extraction of the transversity distribution in the frame- work of collinear factorization based on the global analysis of pion–pair pro- duction in deep–inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets and in proton–proton collisions with one transversely polarized proton. The extrac- tion relies on the knowledge of dihadron fragmentation functions, which are taken from the corresponding electron–positron annihilations. This analysis starts a new phase, deepening our knowledge of the chiral–odd transversity to the same qualitative level as the chiral–even spin averaged and helicity dis- tributions. The improved accuracy of the calculated nucleon tensor charge opens a new way to explore possible effects from new physics in high–precision low–energy nucleon/nuclear cross sections.
