Description

Over last decade it has become clear that networking technology is slowly reaching its limits. Although networking has adapted to new challenges remarkably well, it gets more and more difficult to accommodate recent use case scenarios such as massive virtualization, cloud computing, mobile access, and dynamically changing environments. Software-Defined Networking has been proposed as an alternative approach to networking in which networks are opened up to programmers in order to make them more amenable to new work loads, changing requirements, and agile environments. Although its full potential needs yet to be explored, SDN already offers a number of compelling use cases for the management of data center networks. This talk will introduce a number of use cases that show how SDN can improve service from data centers in a dynamic world in which users expect secure access to resources 24/7. SDN for network virtualization and disaster recovery are two topics which will be explored. Limitations of current technology will be highlighted as well as some research directions for solving them.
