Description
In the past few years, much progress was seen in the development of
multi-pixel APDs operated in the Geiger mode (Pixelized Photon Counter, PPD).
Multi-Pixel Photon Counter, produced by Hamamatsu Photonics, is a variation of
those devices.
It has many advantages such as high gain, large photon detection efficiency, and
insensitivity to magnetic fields and is expected to replace PMTs in some of
applications.
The first application of MPPC to a real experiment will be the T2K neutrino
oscillation experiment, which will start data taking in 2009.
In this talk, I will first introduce the operation principle of MPPC.
Then, the performance of MPPC developed for T2K and the status of detector
preparation will be presented.
