Description
The expansion of the Universe was predicted by Albert Einstein and
measured by Edwin Hubble almost eighty years ago. Due to gravity it
was expected that the cosmic expansion would slow down over time. Ten
years ago observations of distant supernovae aimed at determining the
decelaration due to the matter content of the Universe found an
apparent accelerated expansion. This surprising results has been confirmed by
several other methods and now stands as the greatest mystery in
physics today. The talk will present the evidence for this new Dark Energy
component and present possible interpretations.
