Travel information

By train or bus

Trains operated by Trenitalia (https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html) travel frequently between Trieste and major Italian cities.

Moreover, buses are available for local and regional transport (https://tplfvg.it/it/orari/travel/).

By plane

Arriving by plane, one can choose to land at Trieste Airport, Venice Marco Polo Airport, or Treviso Airport

From Trieste Airport to Trieste train station

The airport train stop is connected to the airport through an elevated corridor. Train tickets can be purchased from the automatic machines at the train stop, or directly from the Trenitalia website https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html

The bus stops are outside the airport terminal building, on the left. Bus G51 runs from the airport to downtown Trieste. At the airport, bus tickets can be purchased at the Agenzia Turismo FVG on the ground floor or from the automatic machine at the arrivals hall. The tickets must be purchased before getting on the bus. https://tplfvg.it/it/orari/travel/

Alternatively, the taxi service from the airport runs from 8 to 24 (Tel: +39 0481 778000). Taxis are located outside the arrivals area. The cost of the journey is around € 70.00.

From Venice Marco Polo airport to Trieste train station

Visitors can reach Trieste from Venice Marco Polo Airport by bus + train (look at the Trenitalia website for train schedules https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html) or via Flixbus. The Mestre-Venezia airport buses take approximately half an hour from the airport to the train station of Venezia Mestre, where passengers switch to trains that run direct to Trieste. Train tickets must be purchased and validated at the validating machines before boarding trains; fines for carrying non-validated tickets are high.

From Treviso airport to Trieste train station

Visitors can reach Trieste from Treviso Airport by bus + train (look at the Trenitalia website for train schedules https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html). The Treviso airport buses take approximately 15 minutes from the airport to the train station of Treviso, where passengers switch to trains that run direct to Trieste. Train tickets must be purchased and validated at the validating machines before boarding trains; fines for carrying non-validated tickets are high.

By car

Trieste is connected through the A4 with the European Italian motorway networks. Trieste can be reached by car, both using the A4 highway from Venice-Mestre and the A23 highway from Tarvisio-Austria, with exit at the Lisert tollbooth.
After the toll booth, continue along the highway and, after about 20 km, take the Sistiana-Strada Costiera exit and take the SS 14, a panoramic coastal road, which leads directly to the city center (18 km).
Alternatively, after passing the Sistiana-Strada Costiera exit, continue the highway on the Karst plateau, after about 25 km from the Lisert tollbooth take the Prosecco exit (immediately after the tunnel), then continue in the direction Villa Opicina and, arriving at the traffic light controlled crossroads, turn right and go down towards Trieste-city center.
You can consult Google Maps to determine the best itinerary.

Once in Trieste...

Since Trieste is quite a small city, the best way to get around it is to walk.

The venue, located in Via Elisa Baciocchi, 4, is at a nice 25-min walk along the seafront from the train station, and just 10-min walk from Piazza Unita', the main square in the City center.

In alternative, there are several buses that connects the venue with the train station, the city centre and the University campus. You can pay by card on the bus, or purchase the tickets in advance, at the main train station in Trieste and at the many local tobacco shops (which are indicated with the symbol T). The cost of a one-way ticket is 1.50 Eur or 3.35 Eur for the full day ticket. If you bought a paper ticket, remember to validate it at the moment of getting on the bus in the machines located in the interior.
