Abstract: Dimensional regularization is arguably the most popular and efficient scheme for loop calculations. Yet, when applied to chiral (gauge) theories like the Standard Model and its extensions, it leads to the infamous “gamma-5 problem”. The only formulation that has been demonstrated to be consistent at all orders in perturbation theory, the so-called Breiteinlohner-Maison-’t Hooft-Veltman scheme, manifestly breaks chiral gauge-invariance. We show that the introduction of auxiliary fields allows us to restore a spurious version of gauge-invariance, and thus take full advantage of all the symmetries of the theory.
