Description
Abstract:  The W boson mass is measured using a sample of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment during 2016 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 16.8\fb. The W boson mass is extracted using single-muon events via a highly granular maximum likelihood fit of the transverse momentum, pseudorapidity, and charge distribution of the selected muons. This novel approach enables significant in-situ constraints of experimental and theoretical uncertainties. The result has an uncertainty comparable to the most precise measurement to date and is the most precise measurement at a proton-proton collider, representing a crucial step in solving the W boson mass puzzle.
