Description
The advent of Radioactive Ion Beams (RIB) has transformed the landscape of nuclear structure studies over the past 20 years. After recalling a few of the major recent discoveries, the scientific case for building new RIB facilities, delivering higher intensities and reaching out further from stability, will be outlined. The European roadmap for RIB facilities, recently published by NuPECC, includes the construction of FAIR and the development of a strategy for ISOL facilities including the construction of SPIRAL2, HIE-ISOLDE and SPES in preparation for the ultimate facility EURISOL. The complementary nature of these facilities will be outlined and the specificities of the SPES project and its scientific program will be emphasized. The technical challenges posed by EURISOL and some solutions elaborated during the EURISOL Design Study (supported by the EU 6th framework program) will be described.
