Description

We present a novel measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry in Drell-Yan production in the leptonic (electrons and muons) decay channel using 137 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment at sqrt(s)=13 TeV. The measurement is performed over a broad range of dilepton invariant masses and rapidities (including also electrons reconstructed in the forward region of the detector) to enhance the sensitivity to electroweak couplings and simultaneously reducing uncertainties originating from the Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs). The data are used for an extraction of the effective leptonic weak mixing angle, using state-of-the-art theoretical predictions at NNLO in QCD and NLO in EW couplings. The value of the angle is determined to be : sin2θeffl=0.23157±0.00010(stat)±0.00015(sys)±0.00009(th)±0.00027 (PDF), the best precision to date at an hadron collider, and in good agreement with previous determinations and with the Standard Model expectation from global electroweak fits. The total uncertainty is strongly dependent on the PDFs , and varies between 24⋅10–5 and 35⋅10−5, depending on the set used.
