The ESRF started the user operation in 1994 in Grenoble, being the first high energy 3rd generation synchrotron light source in the world. In 2019, a new accelerator based on the Hybrid Multi Bend Achromat (HMBA) cell, the Extremely Brilliant Source (EBS), has been built. The horizontal emittance of the EBS is 30 times smaller than in the previous machine, increasing the brilliance of the x-rays. The new accelerator is now the first of a new generation of synchrotron light sources. The seminar will first cover the design phase of the EBS: how we get a low emittance lattice, basic principles of the HMBA cell and its optimization studies. The second part will cover the installation and the commissioning of the new accelerator. The final part is dedicated to the applications: what kind of experiments can be done in a synchrotron light source.
