Description
It is a basic question of field theory, whether it is possible to find a consistent, interacting action for a massive spin-2 state in four dimensions. A unique ghost-free theory for a free massive graviton – Fierz-Pauli model – has proven to be extremely hard to generalize at the nonlinear level, without violating its consistency. Recently, a class of four-dimensional covariant non-linear theories of massive gravity, free of ghosts in the certain (“decoupling”) limit (and potentially - at the full nonlinear level) have been constructed. After reviewing some formal aspects of this class of theories, I will discuss their relevance for cosmology.
