In this talk I will review the most important empirical evidences of the existence of Dark matter (DM), that can be obtained from stellar dynamics on galactic scales, attempting to elucidate some unfortunate (but quite common) misconception. I will then move to present and discuss some mathematical aspects (and limits) of MOND, an interesting alternative to DM, rich of observational predictions
