Description

Depending on the application, there is a large variety of small PMTs available on the market. The photocathode sensitivity ranges from the UV to the NIR; the characteristics of the PMTs depend on the specific application: scintillation readout, scintillation counting, high speed, Cherenkov, High Magnetic Field, low radioactivity, cryogenic experiments and so on. Moreover, the characteristics of the PMTs also depends on the research field application: collider, satellite, underwater and so on. A summary of the available products and a comparison of their performance will be one of the main focus of this talk. Eventually, we will focus on the PMTs used by three of the largest astro-particle experiments: Auger, CTA and KM3NeT. In particular, we will focus on the tools developed to perform the test and calibration of large samples and on the measured performance of these PMTs.
