The main airport is Leonardo Da Vinci in Fiumicino, about 30 kilometres southwest of the city, is the main airport in Rome. From Fiumicino airport to Basilica San Paolo (and backwards):

  • Direct train "Leonardo Express" to Roma Termini station (14€). Departures every 15 minutes. Time: 35 minutes. From Roma Termini station take the Metro B line towards Laurentina and get off at Basilica San Paolo.

  • Local train "Regionale" to Roma Tiburtina / Fara Sabina / Orte; it stops in all intermediate stations (8€). We suggest you to get off at Roma Ostiense station. Departures about every 15 minutes. Time: 31 minutes. From Roma Ostiense station take the Metro B line towards Laurentina and get off at Basilica di San Paolo. Please note that the Metro B station close to Roma Ostiense is named "Piramide" (because there is a 2000 years old pyramid in front of the metro station...).

Public Transportation in Rome

With a BIT ticket (Biglietto Integrato a Tempo) it's possible to take any kind of public transport (metro, tram, bus or train) within the municipality of Rome (e.g. inside the Grande Raccordo Anulare). Be aware that the Fiumicino Airporto IS NOT part of the Rome municipality!

A simple BIT ticket costs 1.5€ and it's valid for 100 minutes and for only 1 ride on Metro A and B without exiting from the turnstiles (tornelli). Note that it's fine to take a bus/tram/train after a metro ride if within 100 minutes from the first stamping.

It's possible to buy the tickets directly at the metro stations from the automatic dedicated machines or at any newsstand.

Daily tickets

Be aware that it's possible to save some money if you buy (multi)daily tickets. All the informations (in italian) are here: ATAC
Here there is a little summary of all the available (multi)daily tickets:
  - 24h ticket (valid 24 hours from the first stamping) at 7€;
  - 48h ticket at 12.5€;
  - 72h ticket at 18€
  - weekly ticket, called CIS, at 24€. Note that this ticket is not valid for 7*24 hours: if the first stamp is done on sunday, the ticket is valid until 23:59 of following saturday.
With these tickes is possible to take an unlimited number of rides on all metro, buses, trams and trains within the Rome municipality.

Suggested apps

To move within Rome and to get help in choosing the right bus, tram or metro, we suggest you to use the smartphone app called Moovit, since it shows the real waiting time for buses and trams (since it uses the GPS bus informations from the ATAC database). Google Map and CityMapper are two good alternative apps, but they show only the "official" timetable (that can differ quite a lot from the actual timetable...).
