Magnetic properties of strongly interacting matter

Description
The effects of strong magnetic backgrounds on the properties of strongly interacting matter are the subject of growing theoretical interest, because of their possible phenomenological implications. In this talk I will review some recent results obtained by lattice QCD simulations, with a focus on the determination of the behavior of the free energy of the system as a function of the external field. I will discuss technical issues related to this determination and show that strongly interacting matter behaves as a paramagnet, with a magnetic susceptibility which steeply rises as one enters the Quark-Gluon Plasma phase. The magnetic field contribution to the equation of state of the system is discussed as well.
