Description
Thick disks are ubiquitous structures in disk galaxies over the whole
Hubble sequence, from lenticular to late-type spirals.
After reviewing the main formation scenarios proposed in the literature, I
will present some very recent results obtained by analyzing data of the
Milky Way solar neighborhood. The picture of early formation of the
Galactic disk that emerges from these data will be presented, together
with a comparison with the most recent numerical models.
