Orphan radioactive sources are the most likely origin of accidental contamination of products and plants in the steel industry. After several accidents occured in EU countries, the Council Directive 2003/122/Euraton of 22 December 2003 was issued on the control of high-activity sealed radioactive sources and orphan sources, encouraging the establishment of systems aimed at detecting points of the recycling chain. Worldwide, over 400 million tons of metal is recycled each year.
