Mesons and glueballs at large N

We review classic and more recent arguments for studying SU(N) gauge theories in the limit of an infinite number of colors in order to gain more insights into non-perturbative phenomena in QCD. We show how one can use lattice calculations to make contact with analytic arguments in the large-N limit. Recent numerical results for the meson and glueball spectrum with be discussed, with particular emphasis on their implications for our understanding of QCD.
