Description
Heavy quarks, charm and beauty, are produced in initial hard scatterings of collisions due to their large masses. The cross section of the charm and beuty productions can be used to test the quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of the strong interaction. Moreover, the nuclear modification factor (R$_{AA}$) carries information about the heavy-quark energy loss within the QGP and elliptic azimuthal anisotropy (v$_2$) is a sensitive probe for the collective motion of the heavy quarks and the path length dependence of heavy-quark energy loss in the medium. ALICE has investigated heavy quarks via semileptonic heavy-flavour decays. Inclusive electrons were identified with the TPC, TOF, TRD and EMCal detectors and the electron background contribution was subtracted with the invariant mass and cocktail methods. We present measurements of electrons from semileptonic heavy-flavour hadron decays in p-p collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 7 TeV, and R$_{AA}$ and v$_{2}$ of electrons from heavy-flavour decays in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 2.76 TeV. The results were compared to theoretical models.
