Description

The SUNSTONE Cultural Heritage Training provides an introduction to synchrotron-based X-ray computed tomography for cultural heritage applications. Through lectures, case studies and practical exercises based on the BEATS beamline at SESAME, participants will learn how to design tomography experiments, prepare beamtime proposals, process 3D datasets and apply advanced imaging techniques to the investigation of archaeological, historical and artistic materials.

      Introduction to Archaeometry: Scientific Approaches for the Study of Cultural Heritage 1h 30m

      This lecture provides an introduction to archaeometry, the interdisciplinary field that applies scientific methods to the study of archaeological and cultural heritage materials. The course presents the main research questions addressed through archaeometric investigations, including provenance studies, reconstruction of ancient technologies, conservation assessment, authentication, and dating.
      Particular attention is devoted to the selection of analytical strategies based on the nature of the artefact and the scientific objectives of the study. An overview of the most widely used diagnostic techniques is provided, including X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS), multispectral imaging, and X-ray computed tomography.
      Through a series of case studies involving archaeological ceramics, painted artefacts, textiles, and historical materials, participants will learn how complementary analytical approaches can be combined to obtain information on composition, manufacturing processes, degradation mechanisms, and conservation state. The lecture also highlights the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration between physicists, chemists, archaeologists, conservators, and museum professionals in addressing complex cultural heritage challenges.
      The session serves as a foundation for the subsequent training activities, providing participants with the conceptual framework needed to design and interpret synchrotron-based investigations in archaeology and cultural heritage research.

      Looking Inside the Heritage of Ancient Lilybaeum: on-site X-ray CT investigations at the Museo Lilibeo in Marsala (Sicily, Italy) 1h 30m

      This seminar presents the results and methodological workflow of an on-site X-ray computed tomography campaign carried out at the Museo Lilibeo in Marsala, Sicily. After introducing the archaeological context of ancient Lilybaeum and the museum collections, the talk will focus on the use of a custom-made portable CT system, developed at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Bologna University in collaboration with INFN_CHNet, for the non-invasive investigation of cultural heritage objects directly inside the museum. The acquisition strategy, practical constraints of in situ measurements, and the main steps of data processing—from radiographic projections to reconstructed CT slices—will be discussed. The final part will illustrate how CT data can be further processed to obtain three-dimensional renderings and digital models, supporting the study of internal structures, manufacturing techniques, conservation issues and hidden features of the investigated objects.
