Analytic results for scattering amplitudes are generically expressed in terms of polylogarithmic functions and their generalization. I review new mathematical developments that shed new light on the algebraic structure underlying these functions, and I show examples of loop integrals that, using this framework, take an extremely simple and elegant form, hinting towards a hidden simplicity in scattering amplitudes that waits yet to be uncovered
