What principles uniquely determine string theory? In this seminar, we show how key features of string theory amplitudes, such as the spectrum of masses and spins, emerge from mandatory consistency requirements and a few simple assumptions. By slightly strengthening one of these assumptions, we are able to uniquely bootstrap string theory amplitudes, both planar and non-planar, at four points and beyond.
