Description
Clustering techniques are widely used in a number of disparate fields. After a brief introduction to clustering and an equally brief review of a few selected applications, we will concentrate on clustering in physics, i.e. on jets. We will describe the recent progress in jet clustering techniques, achieved in large part by reinterpreting the problems at hand in a geometrical manner. We will then show how the availability of modern and efficient clustering algorithms has made it possible to introduce or more easily exploit characteristics of jets like their area (e.g. for subtraction of background contamination) and their substructure (e.g. for tagging boosted heavy particles through their decay products).
