Beam manipulations with plasma accelerators

Date: Friday 3rd October at 11:00 BST (UK time)
Speaker: Dr Riccardo Pompili, researcher at INFN (Frascati)

Abstract

Beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA) uses a high-energy electron beam to excite a plasma wave and can sustain accelerating fields orders of magnitude beyond conventional radio-frequency structures.

The seminar will highlight the EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB facility that we are building at LNF-INFN, aiming to demonstrate high-quality electron beams up to several GeV and able to drive a FEL.

This seminar will also highlight recent progress obtained at SPARC_LAB, a test-facility currently performing R&D experiments in view of EuPRAXIA.

The seminar can now also be found on YouTube: https://youtu.be/2IRDEHJEiS4

Biography

Dr Riccardo Pompili is a researcher at INFN, Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, Scientific Coordinator of SPARC_LAB, and Head of the Plasma Working Area of EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB.

Dr Riccardo Pompili got his PhD in Physics in 2013 at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” with a thesis related to the development of an Electro-Optical Sampling diagnostics conceived for beamdriven plasma wakefield accelerators for which he was awarded in 2014 by the “Young Scientist Prize” of the Italian Synchrotron Light Society. Currently he is the scientific coordinator of the SPARC_LAB accelerator activities and leader of Plasma Working Area for the EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB project. During his scientific career he got broad experience in accelerators and plasma physics witnessed by several pioneering works published as corresponding author. In 2025 he received the Higil Kim prize for his early career achievements at the International Accelerator Particle Conference held in Taipei.
