This workshop shall provide an overview of the contributions from the INFN Labs, the INFN National Scientific Committees, and the Early Career Researcher (ECR) representatives, in preparation of the Italian document for the update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP). It follows the INFN Workshop held in Rome on 6–7 May 2024, where an initial significant discussion on the ESPP update took place, laying the groundwork for the INFN’s contribution to this process.

The ESPP update, launched in March 2024 by the CERN Council, should develop a visionary and concrete plan for the long term future to advance knowledge in fundamental physics, further our understanding about the origin of the mass, the origin and structure of fundamental interactions, symmetries, asymmetries or broken symmmeties. This plan should attract and recognise the value of international collaboration of European laboratories and allow Europe to continue to play a leading role in the field, through the realisation of the next flagship project at CERN. The ESPP update should identify the preferred option for the next collider at CERN and prioritise alternatives to be pursued, should that option prove not to be feasible or competitive. It should also indicate priorities for areas of exploration complementary to colliders, for other experiments to be considered at CERN and at other laboratories in Europe, and for participation in projects outside Europe.

To instruct a fruitful and participatory process, the Secretariat of the European Strategy Group (ESG) invited particle physicists at universities, international and national laboratories, and national institutes, to provide their input to the funding agencies through a series of national workshops. This workshop is the last occasion for broad discussion to exchange views before the deadline to deliver the INFN national input to the ESPP by 31 March 2025.
