Title: Axions from string theory and how to derive their effective theory

Abstract: I will discuss how string theory naturally provides axions and how to relate them to our low-energy universe. First, I will give an overview on string axions and the ingredients needed to describe their effective theory in 4D, such as Calabi-Yau compactification and D-branes. Then, I will move to the supergravity regime and show how to compute their masses and decay constants, trying to highlight what is fundamental and generic and what are instead the free parameters. Finally, I will comment on the state of the art and possible future developments in the string landscape.
