Description
We review the theoretical foundations of the so-called gravitomagnetic effects in general relativity and, more in general, in relativistic theories of gravity. We focus on the many faces of gravitoelectromagnetism and discuss analogies and differences with the electromagnetic formalism.
Then, we outline from a historical perspective the proposals that have been made to detect gravitomagnetic effects in astrophysical observations and, eventually, we discuss the some possibilities of detecting these effects in Earth-bound experiments.
