Ultra peripheral collisions (UPCs) involving protons and heavy ions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) represent the energy frontier for photon-induced reactions. In this talk, we will discuss how the study of UPCs at the LHC can serve to probe the nucleus and nucleons, advancing the field of strong interactions in unprecedented ways. Such studies are expected to enhance our understanding of gluonic saturated matter.  Recent results on a variety of processes, from coherent and incoherent vector mesons to photonuclear jets will be presented. The prospects for searches beyond the Standard Model and exotica using UPCs will also be presented, as well as the new directions in this field, including the use of Quantum Tomography. Finally, the plans for exploiting the upcoming detector upgrades for UPC studies will also be discussed.
