The search for supersymmetry (SUSY) has been one of the main objectives of the ATLAS physics programme over the Run-1 and Run-2 data-taking periods at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While the LHC Run-3 data taking is in full swing, and more than a decade after the Higgs boson discovery, it is important to take stock of the step-change impact that SUSY-motivated BSM searches have had on the field. In this seminar, focusing on Run-2 results from SUSY searches with the ATLAS experiment, after a bird’s-eye review of the original motivations to search for supersymmetric signals at the LHC, I will discuss highlights of key methods and results, and reflect on lessons learnt.
