The workshop will be held in the suggestive venue of Palazzo Grimaldi in Modica, a city in South-Eastern Sicily listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site

Palazzo Grimaldi is located at 106 Corso Umberto in the city centre of Modica, within walking distance of most hotels.

Palazzo Grimaldi is a historic building from the 18th and 19th centuries, designed in the neo-Renaissance style. The third floor features traces of late Baroque style, particularly visible on the shelves under the balconies. The palace serves as the headquarters of the Giovan Pietro Grimaldi Foundation and houses a picture gallery in its halls. (Image courtesy of Fondazione Grimaldi)

Modica is a Baroque town located in the Ragusa district, part of the historic Val di Noto site in southeastern Sicily. This area became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. Built in the Neolithic age, Modica was once the capital of a powerful country, boasting a rich tradition of culinary specialities and a great artistic and cultural heritage. Today, Modica is well known for its traditional chocolate, which has Aztec origins.

The historic centre, which was entirely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693, comprises two main districts: Modica Alta and Modica Bassa. Walking through the streets of Modica means walking through history, surrounded by late Baroque palaces, churches, majestic staircases, and great artworks. The countryside around Modica is characterized by a network of dry-stone walls marking each plot, scattered with carob trees, olive trees, and prickly pears, creating very picturesque landscapes.

The surroundings of Modica include picturesque towns such as Noto, Ragusa, and Scicli, famously featured in the books and TV shows of Commissario Montalbano, as well as scenic seaside locations.

Modica is the perfect location for our conference, offering an inspiring setting for scientific discussions and networking with colleagues. In addition to its rich cultural heritage, attendees can enjoy the nearby golden beaches and indulge in the local culinary delights.

Modica can be reached by bus from the nearby airports of Catania and Ragusa-Comiso. More information can be found on the website section Travelling information and Accommodation.
