Once you are in Genova

Workshop venue

The conference will take place in "Sala del Minor Consiglio" at Palazzo Ducale. Once home to the doges of Genova, Palazzo Ducale now hosts cultural events, exhibitions, conferences, and a cafe.

Palazzo Ducale is at the very heart of the city centre, overlooking Piazza De Ferrari (the city's main square) and Piazza Matteotti. Dozens of small restaurants, bars and historic shops can be found in the vicoli (narrow alleys) around Palazzo Ducale.

Accommodation

Please book your accommodation at your earliest convenience because July - August is the high season and Liguria is a very popular tourist destination. You can find many options in Porto Antico or in the Old Town area, close to Palazzo Ducale. For quieter options, we recommend the area between Palazzo Ducale and Brignole train station.

We are aware of companies contacting participants regarding accommodation. Please, beware that they are not related in any way to the workshop organisation.

Welcome Drinks

A drink reception ("aperitivo") will take place on Monday 29th July from 19:00 at Banano Tsunami in the Porto Antico area.

After the welcome drink, you will find plenty of options for dinner in the surroundings and we will be happy to give you our best suggestions to enjoy the nightlife in Genova!

Suggestions for excursions

Genova and the Ligurian Riviera offer you dozens of different opportunities to explore, discover or simply relax on the beach. We list some suggestions here, but please refer to websites such as Visit Genoa for more information.

Urban walks by the seaside

A stroll along Corso Italia to the fisherman village of Boccadasse to enjoy a drink and fried fish on the beach.

A trip to Nervi to Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi by the cliffs. It's a short walk overlooking the sea that ends in a small beach with a bar. Take your swimming gear. You can visit Parchi di Nervi on the way back.

Boat trips

A boat trip to San Fruttuoso Abbey to enjoy a corner of paradise by the Mount of Portofino.

If you feel lucky you can also go for whale-watching, on boats regularly scheduled to depart from the Porto Antico area, hosting also the famous Genova Aquarium.

A bigger splash

Many beautiful villages of the Ligurian Riviera are just a short train ride from Brignole or Piazza Principe train stations.

This includes the magnificent Cinque Terre area, where you can find multiple ways to enjoy beach life or hiking or both.

The beach options closest to Genova include Bogliasco, Pieve Ligure, Sori and Camogli on the East side or Arenzano, Varazze, Celle and Albissola on the West side.

But feel free to ask for suggestions on more spots that can't be missed!

Urban hiking

Really close to the city centre and to the social dinner venue, you can find a dense network of pathways overlooking the sea, in the Parco delle Mura area.

You can also reach the area via the historical Genova-Casella Railway or directly from the city centre via multiple cable railways. On the way back downtown, don't forget to enjoy the sunset from Spianata Castelletto.

Art and architecture in the city centre

Last but not least, Genova's historic centre has the honour to be part of the Unesco World Heritages.

We have organised a guided tour in English on Thursday afternoon. There are only 30 places on a first-come first-served basis. If you are interested, please sign up here, before 20/7.

Social Dinner

The social dinner will take place on Thursday 1st August at Ristorante Montallegro, starting from 19:30. The best (and most scenic) way to get there is with the funicolare (cable railway) Zecca - Righi, which takes you from the city centre (Largo della Zecca) to Righi, where the restaurant is.
