Spin chains and the Grassmannian, with generalizations

Integrable quantum spin chains are very
classical and much studied objects of
mathematical physics. Among their many
appearances, I will review the relation between
them and the geometry of the Grassmann variety
(or more precisely, the sigma model with that
target) due to Nekrasov and Shatashvili. This
story admits far reaching generalizations that I
will try to describe.
