The Monte Pennar Astrophysical Observatory of the University of Padova is located next to Asiago, a small township of the Veneto region in the province of Vicenza, at the heart of the famous Hòoge Vüüronge dar Siban Komàüne - Altipiano dei Sette Comuni ("Plateau of the Seven Townships") which rises from 87 m up to an altitude of 2341 m. The clear air and the low presence of urban lighting made Asiago an ideal setting for stargazing. Indeed, the Astrophysical Observatory – which houses the Galileo Telescope – was founded here in 1942, and was the largest in Europe in its time.

The surrounding landscape hosts green forests and offers magnificent scenery made up of vast fields, villages decorated by high bell towers and a crown of peaks in the backdrop. Many zones were theatres for fierce battles during the World War I. Today, they are privileged destinations for excursionists following the area’s numerous traces of history.

The Plateau is also the location of the Cimbric language, a dialect of Southern Bavarian origin which dates back to the Middle Ages.

The name Asiago is also indissolubly tied to the homonymous cheese, a delicacy produced, of course, on the Plateau since time immemorial, and classified as Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). The origins of the cheese date back to the 10th century, when the vassals of these lands payed their lord, the Bishop of Padua.
