Description

THE MAGNETAR LEGACY

Magnetars are extraordinary neutron stars (NS). Their X/γ-ray emission, powered by dissipation of ultra-strong magnetic fields (> 1015 G), is a unique probe of NS interior physics.

Millisecond spin at birth is probably key to the formation of magnetars via a powerful dynamo, a scenario supported by recent MHD simulations. Having huge spin and magnetic energies, newborn magnetars can power intense gravitational wave signals and electromagnetic transients, e.g. gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), Super-Luminous Supernovae, Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs).

I will present our current understanding of magnetars, new results linking them to GRBs and FRBs, and ongoing research on their multi-messenger signatures.
