Description
ABSTRACT

I will review the current status of the determination of the light quark masses, concentrating in particular on those based on lattice calculations. I will then discuss how the analysis of the process $\eta \to 3 \pi$ allows one to extract clean information about the isospin-violating mass ratio $Q$: \[ \frac{1}{Q^2}=\frac{m_d^2-m_u^2}{m_s^2-\hat m^2} \; , \] which is complementary to current lattice calculations. I will give details about a dispersive treatment of this decay which we are carrying out and discuss future plans about how to include also a treatment of isospin-breaking effects.
