Critical Parametric Quantum Sensing

Description

Quantum critical systems close to phase transitions exhibit a divergent susceptibility, suggesting that an arbitrarily high  precision is achievable when they are used as physical probes. However, such sensitivity improvement is counterbalanced by the critical slowing down, leading to a longer protocol duration time. Here, we present phase-transition-based sensing protocols implementable in a broad class of quantum optical systems. We show that, in spite of the critical slowing down, critical quantum optical probes can achieve quantum advantage in sensing. We discuss two. applications in quantum magnetometry and superconducting-qubit readout where Heisenberg limited precision can be achieved.
