The National Centre for Oncological Hadrontherapy (CNAO) is the first Italian facility for the treatment of deep located tumours with proton and carbon ion beams and active scanning technique. The accelerator complex includes a synchrotron and three treatment rooms. The injector was fully commissioned by the end of 2009. Full installation of the machine was completed in early 2010. A description of the project and the recent advances in the commissioning and performance of the CNAO complex will be reported.
