First results from the Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermilab
After years of work the international collaboration of Muon g-2, of which INFN has contributed since its inception, has obtained, under the co-direction of Dr. Graziano Venanzoni, a measurement of the so-called anomalous magnetic moment of the muon with unprecedented accuracy, confirming the discrepancies between experiment and Standard Model Theory.
The new measurement of Muon g-2 achieves a statistical significance of 3.3 sigma, and its combination with the result of the previous one at the Brookhaven National Laboratory brings the significance of the discrepancy to 4.2 sigma. This new result represents an important and exciting clue to the possible presence of still unknown forces or particles and suggests new studies both experimental and Theoretical.
