Abstract

Electric and magnetic dipole moments (EDM / MDM) of fundamental particles are powerful probes for physics within and beyond the Standard Model. From the experimental point of view, they have been studied in the case of stable or quasi-stable particles, such as the electron, the muon and the proton. However, experimental data on the MDM and EDM of short-lived particles is very limited due to the difficulties imposed by their short lifetimes. The SELDOM project aims at searching and measuring the EDM / MDM of charm and strange baryons. Strange baryons, such as the Λ0, have a lifetime long enough that they can fly through the magnetic field of the LHCb detector tracking system. Consequently, the EDM / MDM can be measured via the spin precession, using the existing experimental facility. The main challenge consists in the reconstruction of the baryon decay using only the signals coming from the tracking stations located downstream of the dipole magnet. For the case of charm baryons, the strong electromagnetic field experienced by particles channeling through a bent crystal can be exploited to generate spin precession on a polarized stream of baryons produced in a fixed-target collision. An experimental proposal is taking shape within the LHCb collaboration to add such a system to the existing experimental facility.

I will discuss the current status of the project, particularly the milestones that have been achieved, the results and the future perspectives.
