In this talk, I discuss our recent research activity in electromagnetics, nano-optics, acoustics and mechanics, showing how broken symmetries in artificial materials can control in exotic ways how light interacts with materials, realizing new phenomena and devices for light, radio-waves and sound. I will discuss geometrical asymmetries and generalized forms of chirality, time-reversal symmetry breaking using moving or modulated elements, and parity-time symmetry, from basic design principles, to the impact these tools are having in new technology manipulating classical and quantum waves.
