From a physical and conceptual point of view, in statistical mechanics one basic problem is the link between the probabilistic computations (e.g. the averages) and the results in experiments which are necessarely for a single realisation of a macroscopic system.  With  simple analytical results for stochastic systems, and simulations of Hamiltonian systems, we revise the basic features of macroscopic irreversibility. Emphasis will be put on the fact that, for the vast majority of the far-from-equilibrium initial conditions, in  macroscopic systems  irreversibility is  present  even for a single trajectory.
